Cairo Ill. June 7th 1863.
Friday Morning
My Own Dear Jen,
we arrived at this place just before sunrise this morning. I have just washed & had a very poor breakfast at the hotel. although poor I feel better for it. this afternoon we take the boat for Vicksburg I suppose it must take two or three days to go there as it is five hundred miles from here.
I wish Alex Low only knew that we were coming as we go by Memphis possibly the steamer may put in there if she does I shall hunt the boy up. dont you think we are taking a pretty long trip it is six hundred miles from Cincinnati to this place quite a long ride. we killed time by sleeping about all the way.
I probably now will not hear anything from my resignation, but my dear remember this I shall be with you by the middle of July if not before. I expect it will take about two weeks for my letters to reach you from Vicksburg, & may not now have a chance to write you for a week, but shall write every chance I get, so dont worry will you Jen, for I am feeling good (simply because I know I shall be with you again so soon for good) & if you hear of our being in any battles dont worry, will you dear: for your Uncle Nat will come out all O.K. you at home suffer more than we do if anything. my feelings now are all right for a fight if need be & dont think of the result, while you at home will worry. Worry, which for my sake I pray you not to do—remember me to Father & Mother also Lil & Pat,—Our Regt leads the Corps none other has arrived yet but are all on their way. Jen my best and only love I shall think of you every hour in the day & you will be my good angel. I am with all my love
Your Aff Hus.
Nat—
I anticipate a great deal of pleasure on my trip back to old Dover as I shall see both Alex & William—
"Jen with all thy faults I love thee still"
