Nathaniel Low Jr. to Jennie Niles, 1 October 1864

My Own Dear Jennie
I arrived at Fortress Monroe this morning & reported for duty. Col Webster the Chief Qr Master told me he could not assign me for a few days to anything permanent—So he orderd me here to Norfolk—to examine into the business of a Lt Bradly who is Qr Master at Portsmouth just across the stream—he said / possibly he should give me the Post at Portsmouth—I was going to ask him about Newburn, but an Officer just that moment came in who was just from there & said they had got the Yellow Jack (or fever) quite bad—so I thought this humble person did not care to stick his head into that without he is obliged to—
the chances look to me if I should get the post at Portsmouth—tell George so—also Jim Bartlett. if so they will both hear from me—Geo Genny met me at Fortress Monroe / & is here with me—we stopped at the National Hotel, a Union Home. this place looks Southern you meet 4911 negroes to one white man—The Army is on the move & it is all excitement—will write again tomorrow. I write this in the Express Office, Peirce White is here, tell his friends he is well & looking fine—
with all my love
Your Aff Hus
Nat—
