Charles P. Goodrich to Frances Goodrich, 5 July 1862
Bloomfield Mo. July 5th 1862
Dear Wife,
We were paid off to day. I received $105 which is all that is due me with the exception of a dollar or two in change which I shall get in a day or two. I had no trouble my word passed as good in relation to the $20 about which I wrote you yesterday.
I have paid Alex the $10 which I owed him. Sergt Williams of Fort Atkinson is going to the Cape tomorrow morning early and I shall send to you by him $90. From the Cape it will be sent by express to Hopkins of Fort Atkinson, at whose store you can call and get the money if it ever gets there. You will have to pay the express charges as I have not done so.
Write immediately after getting the money so that I may know that it is safe. I wrote you a long letter yesterday.
Do not be alarmed if you do not hear from me again very soon. It is horrible that we shall go away where I can send no letters. It is late in the evening. I slept but little last night and I must go to my hard bed so—
good night Your husband C. P. Goodrich
