Hubbard Norton Griswold was born on January 19, 1804, in Benson, Vermont, to Alvin H. Griswold and Anna Wass. He married Louisa Kellogg in Benson on August 20, 1828, and they had at least seven children together: Marie, born around 1830; Anna, born around 1832; Alvin Hubbard, born around 1835; Joanna, born around 1837; Gertrude, born around 1847; Julius, born around 1849; and Lucy, born around 1852. The family moved to Madison, Ohio, sometime in the 1840s, and Griswold worked as a farmer. By 1850, he owned $800 in real estate. A decade later, he reported $1,700 in real estate and $600 in personal property. Griswold remained in Madison for the rest of his life, and he died there on August 8, 1892.
