Antie tam M.D.
Sept 21st 1862
Dear Uncle
I take this orpertunity to write a few lines to let you know that I am well and hope this will find you the same or as your condition will permit our Regiment we expect will go in to camp to rest for a few weeks for they are pretty well worn out with hard work of late, and we hope that we shall be recruited in our number our ranks are thined sadly we have driven the Rebs back with heavy loss on there side there loss is counted 5 to one you cannot immagine the horrors of war the men lying 3 and 4 deep pilled in heaps for a mile and a ½ and 2 miles long the 35 have lost a good many men that they shot themselves our Col thinks that he is about played out as far as / he is consarened he has worn out one horse and bought another I will not say much about him now but if you wait till we get home you will know his tricks I am at a loss what to write you about your hands I know that it is hard to bear but there is many a man here that is deprived of his arms and legs entirely and more that is deformed in every way that you can that you can think of. I hope that you will not lose your hands and that you will not be long unwell and hope you will soon be round again I have not made any account of our loss for it is not reported to us yet you will find all the news in the papers
Emory Aldrich was here after the battle and he will perhaps know somthing about it I must close now yours in a hurry Penn
