Dear Father
I now take my pen in hand to rite a hasty note to you to let you know of the doings here in the army. I am to tell you that my Dear Brother is wounded he was shot by one of the enemys sharp shooters while we were a going to the rear, after being relieaved from skirmishing. our he was hit in the left leg just above the knee witch shatered the / bone so that amputation was necessary, witch was done this morning at this place, in a large Brick Church on the south side of the rappahanock, a little ways below kelleys ford. our Regt was the first to cross the river, and to drive the enemy back from the river witch we did with out mutch trouble, and captureing about four hundread prisoners, we crossed about 1 oclock, and then our Company was thrown out in front as / skirmishers for to protect our line. we went out in an open field and laid down behinde some large rocks and then commenced to exchange shots with the rebs, witch was only a little ways in front of us, in the edge of a woods. we laid there untill near dusk, and after we had fired all of our ammunition away, we was relieved, and wen we had got near about half way back the bullet pierced Jonathan leg. I am now siting along side of him / wile I am rite this he looks very well and tryes to make the best of it and says that he thanks the lord that it is not worse than it is. our seargeon done it up with the greatest of care. I have been detailed as a nurce for to take care of him. our regt was very fortunate as a regt for Jonathan was the only one that was hurt, only the army is still on the advance. there is some what of wounded reb's here they are from north carolina. they say that they are tired of the war. there was a good many that come in and gave them selves up.

I am as well as uesewal, and in the best of health. I am in hopes that I can soon get Jont on the road for new York, but he shant want for any thing that is in my power to get he shall have the best treatment that can be had down here, so I think that he will soon get better. he sends his love to you all. I am not with the Regt now nor do not know wen I shall return to it I send my love to them you all. /
