My Dear Father
I now take the pen to rite a line to you, to let you know of the circumstances of us here. I rote a letter to you. nov. 8th (but for got to put the date on it) and told you of the sad affair of jonathan. he was wounded on the 7th of this month, after crossing the Rapahanock river. he was wounded in the left leg above the knee, the bullet broke the bone so that his leg had to be amputated, witch was done at the big brick church, on the other side of the river. the sergeons took very good care in takeing it off, and in dressing it, it was done up with the greatest of care. he was in good spirits wen he was removed from the church, in the ambulance, for warrington juntion, for to take / the cars, for washington.D.C. were he is now I supose. I could not gon any farther than the church with him, but the Doctor promised me that he would look after him and see that he had the best of care. wen I rote to you on the eight I give you most of the particulars of were he was hit and how, and I hope that you have received it be fore this. he has his knapsack with him, witch I hope that will be taken good care of, for there is some things in it worth it haveing, and I would like to see for to remember virginia by. there is allso in it a piece of bone, that was taken from the leg of Jonathan, witch you could see that it was necessary for to be taken off. I am now at a loss for to know what to rite to you, so I must soon close, rite soon,
I am still in the best of health, and in good spirits and hope soon to hear from you and also to hear from Jonathan I have not rote to any one else about Jont, but to you, on the account of not haveing any paper, so you can inform you the rest of the folks of his sad affair.
