Dear Sister
I will now write a few lines but you will be troubled to read them as my hand trembles badly and the weather being hot and myself weak I dont feel like writing but I know you will feel anxious to hear from me. I feel quite smart to day but its so hot one gains strength slow I went out on the street a few moments on the 29th but it made me feel so weak that yesterday I was glad to stay in doors. Gen Grant has ordered all those able to go home in the Hospitals here fourloughed the Dr took my name yesterday I thought I let mine get the fourlough but thats all the good it will do as we have not been paid off but have been expecting to be for sometime past but I cannot get mine unless the Capt sends me my descriptive rool which I have sent for I know not the cost of going to Mass / but the cost is not much as far as NJ Boats go if money was plenty with me I would go home as I feel now, as I think it would improve my health & it will be at least two mos before I shall be able for duty they give 30 days fourloughs but if not well then they will extend them its just the time of year I would like to be at home but I guess I shall have to wait some then take a long fourlough they send 25 a day from the Hospital there are 600 in here. I am sorry Benjamin got drafted he was unlucky I learn by Morton that Wm & Winslow escaped also himself & Albert but Alfred was drafted The men seem to be cheering from all parts. I see peace measures are perching in Washington I dont want to see the President back down one iota on his Emancipation Proclamation for as long as slavery exists there will be a quarrel between the North & South. I see mothers look threatning between Great Britain & the United States there will be war there yet I am sure of it.

I have not herd from Seth for some time I would not be surprised if our Corps returned to Ky soon as all the troops are back at Vicksburg. Old Morgan was used up in fine shape in Ohio. I expect to hear of a Battle soon between Lee & Meade. By the way when you write I wish you would send me some 1 ct postage stamps cant get them here ony the 3 cent ones if I had some I would send a paper occasionaly. I receive the papers you send I received your letter some three days ago and need not say I was glad to hear from you. I have not received a letter from home yet, but expect to soon as I told them to leave off the Co & regt of the 19 letters Seth remailed to me I have not received one. It would not do for me to go to Vicksburg untill I get entirely well its so hot it would kill me the Dr told me I was the sickest one in his ward at one time and that some not half as sick as I was had not got up yet he said my good spirits was what got me up so soon. I aways make / the best of my sickness I like my Dr he is a jolly old Joker he thinks lots of me as I am from Mass his old home he lived up Springfield way speaking of Sergt Jenks being on the staff I could but help laughing he is nothing more or less than quartermasters Sergt no more pay than before & no higher. I think that will give me a chance to step a peg higher but am not sure as it will either as he still belongs to the Co I dont know how it is it dont trouble my head at all I came out a private & expected to go home one but the Capt could not see it in that light the Capt is as good a friend as I would wish to me. I just wrote to Morton Give my love to all, tell Lydia I would like that Photograph to have it taken in the form of yours I like that my Dr said that was the prettiest style he had seen

my best wishes for the welfare & happiness of you all I remain your aft Bro
