Samuel Humer to George H. Mowry, 1863
[fragment]

Continued from third pag

There is many reports in camp about another draft but I hope the war may be settled without that but if they do draft try and dodge the draft if you can and let them go that thinks it is a glorous war to free the niger if they were here awhile they would think it heavy sleding here among the nigers and they would try and get out of it as soon as they could they find it a big breakfast job to lick the rebles / but our country is ruined and I fear that they will never lick the south if they fight them ten years

I think the sooer they can mak it up the better it will be for both sides it reminds me of the old story of the two foxes fighting till there was nothing left but the tails and that will be the way with the north and south the tails will be left and nothing els I dont think the old keystone state will stand another draft we have been getting very well this far

Our time is passing away slowly there has almost 4 months of our time expired this month will put the half of our time in I dont think them men that skedadeled from camp Melur has much more pleasure than we have they will have to put in there time on the rip raps or in some fort they would better came with us you stated in your letter about the deep snow that you could not get up to old Johnys we aint bothered with deep snows but the / great trouble is there is nothing here but nigers here if some of the nigir lovers were here they could go every night well I must close or you will think I am crazy pleas write soon as you can nothing more at preasant but remain your frien Samuel Humer
