Evelyn E. McLean was born on July 5, 1851, in Cincinnati, Ohio, to Nathaniel C. McLean and Caroline Thew. Her father was a lawyer who owned $150,000 of real estate and $27,000 of personal property by 1860. Her mother died sometime in the 1850s. She grew up and attended school in Cincinnati, Ohio, and she married Charles H. Whipple around 1871. They had at least three children: Charles, born around 1873; Henry, born around 1875; and Nathaniel, born around 1876. They lived in Faribault, Minnesota, and her husband worked as a bank cashier. She traveled abroad in 1906, and her passport application described her as 5 feet, 4 inches tall, with brown hair and brown eyes. By 1910, they were living in Washington, D.C. By 1930, they were living in Los Angeles, California. She died in 1932.
