1.
After 5 days fighting we are now in camp behind the intrenchments that we threw up during the night after the hard days fight. it is reported that the enemy are evacuateing but is not credited. the Brigade on the right of us had quite a skirmish to day. they captured 1 Brigade of Rebels.
Fri                               2.
Our Co was on picket last night we had some skirmishing. we have to lay under guns all day to day A captain of the 5th Kentucky shot 3 rebel sharpshooters that surrendered to him to day. he told them it was too late to surrender
Sat                               3.
A rebel Brigade attac our Brigade but they were repulsed with a heavy loss we took 100 prisoners and killed 200.

On B Field. Sunday Morning
Sun                              4.
The Rebels left Murfreesboro last night, they took quite a nomber of our men with them. There was a detail made from our Reg to bury the dead they found the body of Col Roberts buried I heard the Chaplain of the 5 Ky preach

We are still behind the breastworks
nothing of importance happened
Tues                            6.
Were ordered to march to day
Started about noon. marched 3 miles south of Murfreesboro. There is but few families liveing in the town. got into camp about dark built our fires and layed down for the night

Moved about 100 rods this morning. Pitched our tents and rigged camp.
Thur                            8.
Our Reg was detailed to go to Nashville to guard a Provision train started about 5 Oclock got to Nashville about dark. stayed in the market all night had a comfortable time.
Fri                               9.
The train was loaded early in the morning. started for Stones River about 9 Oclock. marched 21 miles and went into camp for the night. wrote a letter to my Mother while at Nashville

Sat                               10.
Left the camp this morning for Stones River. got into camp about 12 Oclock, M. My feet are awful sore.
Sun                              11.
Fell into line and stacked our arms as we expected to be attact. We had an inspection to day of Arms and Amunition. I received a letter from my Sister Maggie. I Chaplan preached to day.
Mon                             12.
Was on detail to Col. Bradleys head quarters to build a fence around his tent. Our Company drew clothing to day I drew a rubber blanket.

H Slayton of the 59th Ills was to our camp to day. he came out of the battle safe
Had orders to be ready for Picket in the morning.
Wed                            14.
Our Brigade is on Picket to day Our Reg relieved the 1st Ohio We are allowed no fires on the Reserve. Col Bradley of the 51st Ill. is Officer of the day. Rebel Pickets can be seen from our outpost.
Thur                            15.
Got into camp about noon were were relieved by the 27 Ills it is raining hard. While I write the storm has chainged from rain to snow

The ground froze last night it is covered with snow. it is quite cold and still snowing. Doctor Higgins of Aurora is here getting the names of the killed and wounded from Kane Co. Wrote a letter to my Sister Maggie.

Wrote a letter H.A. Lieut Scott of Co G of our reg. was dishonerably dismissed from the service of the U.S.A. for leaveing the Battle Field without leave on the 31st of Dec. 1862

Srgt. Hitchcock of our Co. is verry sick There has quite a nomber of our men died since the Battle from the affects of their wounds. Corpl S. Barlacorn of our Co. is appointed Color Bearer of our Reg

Started forrageing this morning got about a mile was ordered back by Gen Sherriden. our Capt. is sick H K Wolcot has command of the Co Drew clothing. I drew 1 Pr Pants 1 Pr socks 1 Pr Boots 1 Cap
Tues                            20.
There was a detail made from our Reg to load forrage train Corpl Voller and 8 men from our Co. the late Capt Vardons things were sold by auction.
Wed                            21.
Sgt. Hedges is on guard to Bradleys headquarters.

I washed my clothes.

Our Reg is on Picket to day we relieved the 1st Ohio. Capt Leighton has command of the reserve. Col Bradley is Officer of the day
Col Stokes of the 1st Tenesee was shot by one of his captains was wounded bad.

Returned to camp from Picket about 10 Oclock. we were relieved by the 38th Ills.

It is verry muddy here we have had quite a rainy season here. the army is quiet. nothing stirring but forrage and provision trains.

We have company drill 2 hours in the forenoon and too in the after Sgt. Watson and Corpl Barlacorn had a pass for Murfreesboro

Gen Johnston has command of our Corps in the absence of Gen McCook. Gen. J. is thought to be a traitor.

The news of William McCurns death reached us to day he was detailed in Hospital No. 12 at Nashville. died with the erysipelas.

I see an account in the paper of my friend Abbot merril of the 13 Ill. being wounded at the Battle of Vicksburgh. Gen Stewart our Old Lieut Col. had command of a division at the Battle

Our Brigade Col Bradley in Command went forrageing went about 5 miles from camp our Battery had quite a duel with a rebel B. I received a letter from my Mother and one from my sister

Got into camp about 10 Oclock Davis'es division started on a scout of 9 days. there was one Brigade from our division with them. I' capt has got well. the 6th Indiana relieved us Major General McCook was married to a Miss Phillips

It is just one year ago to day since we were paid off in MO Davises division has taken some prisoners

Our Brigade was on picket today we relieved the 77 Pensylvania the Pickets were streangthened last night as there were some rebels seen through the day

We were relieved by the 34 Ils there was a forrage train went out this morning. As I write I can hear the artilery playing the train has been attact. We had to go and help our boys with their train.

Got into camp this morning at 10 Oclock. I am sick. J S Wilson and J S Hedges received a box from home containing butter cake and clothing

We had a game of ball. S Marsh is here he is wagon master of the Pioneer Corps. I read a letter from Miss Covely of B [?] to S Marsh

Went on picket. we relieved the 6th Ind. I had charge of the 1st Relief of 12 men. we were to the right of the pike

Returned to camp this morning about 9 Oclock. we were relieved by the 39th Ind. I am sick the boys are playing ball as I write

The Reg went a forrageing I did not go as I reported myself on the sick list as I write it is raining our boys will get a wetting but they have their rubber blankets

Our Brigade had orders to go and relieve Col Grusels Brigade that are stationed on the Salem pike. they are there on an out post I did not go with them when they went. we have heard from our boys that were taken prisoners at the Battle

Dr Handson our assistant sergon came to the reg to day. Corpl Hart was here to day Our Brigade had rations sent to them to day they like the place well. I wrote a letter to my Mother Sister Kate

Our Old Adjutant came to the Reg to day he has been recruiting I am still on the sick list I have the disease called the shingles. it is verry painfull

There are reinforcements arriving daily. they are from Gen Graingers Army Our Surgeon Fitch is has a hospital in Murfreesboro. I am getting tired of the war how I long for home (Home Sweet Home)

I am staying in the Captains tent. Capt Swain came to the old camp. Major Hotenstein has command of the Reg. Benny Opie is verry sick with the mumps

B Opie went to the Hospital at Murfreesboro. Hospital No 1 under Dr Fitch.

Our Orderly sergent H K Wolcot came from the Reg to day to make out pay rolls we expect to get 4 months pay soon I received a letter from my Mother and one from my sister Maggie

Wrote a letter to my sister Mag H K Wolcot went back to the Reg to day our boys that were taken prisoners are at Anapolas Md they have been parolled and are in camp of instruction

They are taken 3 days rations more to our Brigade. The 73rd Ill was paid off yesterday they are in the 2nd Brigade of our Division

Our Surgeon tells us that B Opie died yesterday at the Hospital This is Washingtons birth day there was 100 guns fired at Murfreesboro I have been in the service just 19 months have got 17 more to stay

The 1st Brigade of our Division moved camp this morning on the opposite side of the river they have a splendid place for a camp Our Brigade had 2 more days rations sent to them they will be in on Wednesday

We were relieved by the 88 Ill got into camp about 10 Oclock had orders to prepair for general Inspection and muster. the camp is in a gen hubbub. boys cleaning guns &c.

Were on a forrage expedition went about 10 miles from camp passed through Salem it was verry muddy marching and forage is scarce.
Mon                             2.
The weather is verry pleasant we have orders to be ready to march in ten minutes with 5 days rations. we elected the pvts that are going in the Brigade of honor W Bennett, Goodale, Kale, Kellog, Carson also Sergt Wilson & Corpl Vollor are elected by the Officers of the Reg
 
Tues                            3.
We did not march yesterday as supposed I wrote a letter to Maggie. we signed the Pay Rolls. Drew our pay I drew 39.89. Received 5 dollars from J S Wilson.

March.
Wed                            4.
Got orders to prepair for a march our Corps that is McCooks started about 6 Oclock this morning marched about 15 miles went into camp on a nice stream got our supper and I was detailed with 4 others from I. Co to go on picket. Lt Foster was Officer of the guard (we passed through Varsale)
Thur                            5.
Got off of picket in the morning The regiment started on our march went about 3 miles went into camp as we are laying here we can hear cannonadeing off about 3 miles from us. we are in line of battle. the batery is planted in the road guarding the pike

Left camp this morning about 8 Oclock. marched 3 miles and camped for the day. we are here for a support for the cavelry that are scouting through this country we have orders to sleep with our belts and boxes on

Left camp this morning about 10 Oclock. marched 8 miles went through the town of Tryoon. camped about 6 Oclock P.M. Co I was detailed for Picket. we had 5 outposts. I had charge of the 1st Relief. we are on our way to Franklyn Tenn.

Left camp about 7 Oclock marched 9 miles. passed through some nice country. on the 5th Mar we had 1 Brigade taken prisoners at Franklyn we are now in camp 2 miles east of Franklyn Gen Grainger has command of the Post
Mon                             9.
Started from camp at 8 oclock started for Columbia marched 15 miles passed through the towns of Franklyn and Springhill also over the Battle Field at S[?] we lost 4 men killed and 10 wounded. Saw Gen Grainger and staff also Gen Smith.

March.
Tues                            10.
Left our camp at 9 Oclock. started after the enemy. our Reg was on the advance by Gen Sherridens and the cavelry had some skirmishing we marched 3 miles formed line of Battle stayed an hour and went into camp for the night
Wed                            11.
We stayed in this camp since yesterday afternoon. we are 5 miles from Columbia. the Rebels tried to get away but Gen Granger sent the cavelry around and cut them off they are in a tight place

Started from camp at 7 Oclock in a retrograde movement we marched 32 miles there was quite a [?] of prisoners passed us we went left of Franklyn on the Harpeth River

Left camp this morning at 7 Oclock. marched through the town of Franklyn and Tryoon marched 14 miles my feet are awfull sore I had to fall out. we camped 2 miles from Tryoon expect to [?] Paris to morrow

Started from camp at 4 Oclock marched 24 miles arrived at Camp Stones River about sundown we passed through Eagleton and Salem we had a pretty hard days march there was only 9 got in camp of Co I. when the Reg got there I was one of them
Sunday                        15.
I received a letter from RHS. and one from H.A. spoke for clothing I got 1 Pr Pants and 1 Pr shoes wrote a letter to my Mother sent 20.00 in the letter. Some of the boys feel pretty good on account of whisky

Wrote a letter to H.A. spoke for a pass but was refused as the colonel would not grant but one from a company and he spoke before I did. received a letter from my brother RHS. had orders to go on Picket

We went on picket to day we relieved the 2nd Missouri I had charge of the 3d Reserve there was 9 men and a Corporal we were on our old post on the right of the Pike.

We were relieved by the 5th Ill of Davises div got into camp at 10 Oclock had orders to strike tents and move camp moved about 2 miles went into camp got a letter from my Sister Maggie

Drew 1 Pr Shoes. had a mess of fresh tomatoes. we have got our camp fixed up in good style have orders to prepair for a Grand Review J. Hemple returned from Hopsital at Nashville

Did not have Review on account of the weather. Our Col went home on furlow Had Batallion drill have orders to drill daily We had dress parade WHB & A Goodale & Kellogg were elected for the Brigade of Honor

We were ordered out at day light as our Pickets had been driven in. we had quite a skirmish with them We had a review by Gen Sherriden and Staff had 4 men killed to day

Our Brigade was relieved by the 2d B Our Division was reviewed by Gen Rosecrans and staff. He made a short speach to our Reg. Gen McCook and Sherriden accompanied Gen Rosecrans Corpl [?] returned from hospital of Nashville he was wounded the day of the fight Sgt Hitchcock started home on furlow

We had a Batallion drill this forenoon. Major Leighton drilled us we moved this afternoon to Salem 2 miles from camp we are on outpost our Division is there. we pitched our shelter tents.
Friday                          27.
5 Companies of our reg was ordered on Picket Cos. E & H did not come out. Our Co and C was on one post. Lieut Andrews has command I had charge of the first relief of 7 men

We were relieved by 2 Companys of the 22d Ills. J S Hedges and myself fixed our shelter tent by setting it up the highth of 4 rails we have a verry comfortable place the 22d Ill is on Picket

Nothing happened to day unusual. the boys have it reported around camp that we are going to Illinois to put down Copperheads but it is not believed by any censible person. the 27 Ill is on Picket
Monday                       30.
I read a letter from General Avril[sic] of the Potomac army to his cousin J S Hedges. I have learned consiterable out of a book that I have been reading The title is the Iron rule

8 Companys of our Reg went on Picket. Cos I & C did not go. We were relieved from our outpost at 2 Oclock PM by a Brigade from Davises Division the 74th Ill relieved our Regiment. We got to Camp Shaeffer about 5 Oclock. had roll call twise then had some fiddleing and went to bed.

One year ago to day our Colonel G W Roberts spiked a Battery at Island No 10 on the Mississippi River I had Battalion drill Wrote a letter to my sister Mary. received a letter from H.A.

We had Battalion drill in the forenoon by Lieut Col Hotenstein and Brigade drill in the afternoon by Col Bradley of the 51st Ill
Fri                               3.
We had Battalion drill this forenoon Signed the Pay Rolls expect to get pay this week. I received a photograph of Thos Thumb and his wife

Our Brigade was on Picket we relieved the 6th Indiana Saw Gen McCook and Bride with his staff on a horse back ride. they looked gay.
Sun                              5.
We were relieved by the 88 Ills. crossed the river in wagons. we had to put on our belts as it was reported the Rebels were advanceing on us I had a likeness taken sent it to Mary Jane. Wrote a letter to my Mother sent Col Roberts photograph also Tom Thumb & wife
Mon                             6.
We received our pay to day for Jan & Feb. I drew 26.00. Paid the Sutler 6.95 Settled up with the Sutler unto this day. We moved camp about 20 rods

We had Battallion drill twice to day wrote a letter to H.A. sent my picture also Received a paper from home We had dress parade and some resolution read to us in reguard to Copperheads of the North The Reg gave 3 rousin cheers for the Constitution and broke ranks I bought me a gold pen paid 2 for it Sergt Bush of Co H was reduced to the ranks for gambling

Did not drill in the forenoon. had Brigade drill in the afternoon our camp was Inspected by the Inspector General have orders to go on Picket to morrow
Thur                            9.
Instead of going on Picket we started on a scouting expedition went a little ways and were ordered back then prepaired for Picket we relieved the 75th Ill I wrote a letter to my Mother, sent $5.00 in the letter I stayed with the Reserve Capt Swain had charge of the Reserve

We was relieved by the 6th Indiana Colonel Walworth returned to the Reg to day he has been home on a furlow Our Lieut W P Andrews was promoted to Captain of Co H Sgt Sendan Sgt Powel Sgt Major Parshal of Co C were promoted to Lieutenants . Sgt Yera & Smith of Co F were promoted Sgt Gray of D Co was promoted Orderly Sgt Leonard was promoted to Lieut
Orderly Sgt Runnels was promoted to 2nd Lieut of Co H Sgt McClellan K Co was promoted to 2d Lieut of Co K. Had an inspection to see how many conscripts are wanted in the Regt
Saturday                      11.
We had Battallion drill. this forenoon Col Walworth drilled us. Saw Gen McCook and Bride. Wrote a letter to my Sister Maggie. I drew a blouse. Our Company drew pickled cucumbers the first time since we have been in the service
Sunday                        12.
I washed my clothes Wrote a letter to H O Perry to Corinth Miss. We had Company Inspection. Chaplain Stuff preached to the Reg to day

Our mess had their pictures taken 6 times to day 1 for each man Capt Swain was also in the pictures Capt Swain got a leave of absance for 48 hours to go to Nashville he started this afternoon Corpl Vollor was promoted to Quarter Master Sergent
Tuesday                      14.
Our Brigade went on Picket to day Our Reg relieved the 15th Wisconsin. J S Hedges and myself had charge of the 3d Reserve of 10 men Capt Andrews had charge of the grand Reserve.
Wednesday                 15.
We were relieved by the 25 Ills. Capt Swain returned from Nashville. We got our pictures finished I bought a case for mine. Lieut Gray of Co D had a sword presented to him by his Company

Had Battalion drill this forenoon, and Company drill this afternoon. C A Burnett was appointed Corporal We had dress parade and some orders read in reguard to consolidating Regiments. We were ordered to be ready to march at 7 Oclock
Saturday                      18.
Our Regiment was to work on the fortifications. they are splendid ones. Received a letter from Mary. was in bathing in Stones River I weighed 158 lbs to day

Our Reg & 51st were on Picket to day. Sherridens Division was out scouting to day excepting the 42 & 51st they saw no Rebels

We had inspection this morning of Arms and amunition. We have a report that the rebels are advanceing on us with 90,000. nothing new happened

Wrote a letter to Miss E Our 1st Brigade has a new commander Brigadier Gen Lytle. Turned over our Sibley tents and went into our shelter tents.

Wrote a letter to Abbott Merrill We had Battalion drill H K Wolcott had command of I Co. We had an order read to us reguarding and appointing the 30 for a day of prayer and fasting.
Thursday                     30.
Went on Picket this morning relieved the 6th Indiana Our Company is on the Regimental Reserve. Our Colonel has command of the Brigade in the absence of Riddley

Our Brigade started out this morning. Our Reg was on rear guard we had to help the waggons up the mountain. were until 10 Oclock at night getting up the mountain then marched 4 miles. it was awful dusty went into camp for the night

Layed in camp untill noon Saw Jack Gannon that used to belong to our Co he has enlisted in the 36th Ills. We moved out at 12 Oclock and lay in line of Battle all night. the 39th Indiana Mtd Infantry had a skirmish with the Rebs Companies A & D were on Picket to night

Left our line of Battle at 11 Oclock and marched out 3 miles and went into camp. Cos F I C H were on Picket. stayed there 2 hours and were called in marched 7 miles and got into camp at 11 Oclock at night

We are takeing our position in line of Battle this morning We were in a pretty hard fight this afternoon our Brigade lost killed wounded missing 200, Col Bradley was wounded. Our Col had command of the Brigade We recaptured the 8th Indiana Battery of Woods Division of Crittendens Corps

We took our position in line of Battle we had an awful Battle our Company had 6 killed 4 missing Our Corps was completely whipped we fell back 4 miles [?] has been removed by Longstreets Corps Our killed are [?] Barlacorn P Burnett John Bristow Pat Laraby H Tuttle our missing are J S Wilson Burris LaPlant Osborn Our Major and Adjutant was killed Gen Lytle of the 1st Brigade was killed Gen Morton wounded in hand

Our Company was on Picket about 2 hours were relieved and built dirt works we have a strong position no reinforcements arrived yet but are expected hourly

We are laying in our entrenchments There is some fighting going on all along the line Rosecrans was around the line We are expecting an attack every minute. Wrote a letter to Mother. It is reported that Longstreets Corps have gone back east It is reported that Col Bradley has died from the affects of his wounds  received on the 19th

Had a few shell throwed at us to day. We streangthened our works. Worked untill 11 Oclock at night The enemy made an attack on our left but were [faded]

We moved ½ mile and throwed up new works are near McCooks Head quarters the Rebs keep skirmishing with us all the time. we finished our works to day and have a nice place

I was on detail to day with a chopping squad to fell trees in front of our Batteries. Our Reg lost in the fight. 154. our Brigade lost 547 out of 1500 our Reg went in with 311 men Our loss at Stone River was 162.

Heard Elder Raymond preach. Our Reg was on detail to build breastworks. I was to a funeral of a Capt from 9th Ohio. the NW Band of Chicago [faded]

Elder Raymond preached a sermon near my tent We are on half rations John Berry of our Co died from affects of wounds received on the 20 September at Chickamauga.

J S Hedges received his furlow papers and started home it is for 20 days. We commenced entrenchments that are to be bomb proof. Each Reg digs their own Lieut Wolcott has command of the workers to day. The Rebs shelled us consiterable this afternoon.

We are still at our bomb proof works Lieuts Gray and Hudson have command to day.

Made the acquaintance of Abija Lee of 36 Cavalry Co. B they are Gen Hookers escort. Heard from W Brown a deserter from our Co he is Lieut Co K 123 N.Y.

Had no Inspection to All the boys in our Co were vaxinated as there is quite a nomber of cases of small pox in the Army The Rebs have been shelling all day

This is the last day of the year the third one for me in the Service and I hope it will be the last one. One year ago to day we were fighting at Stone River Tennessee We hear that Jeff Davis is trying to get away to Europe I baked some biscuit for New Year also some beef sent a letter to my Sister Maggie. Rained all day commenced freezing this afternoon. I am verry lonesome sitting in my tent have nothing to do but read novels Capt Preston of Co. C. died on the 30th with numonia.
