Joseph Shaw
Joseph Shaw was born on May 27, 1840, in Newburgh, New York. He married Amanda Johnston in October 1861, and they had at least seven children: Lula, born around 1863; Emma, born around 1866; Nellie, born around 1868; William, born around 1870; George, born around 1873; Maude, born around 1875; and Harry, born around 1878.
 
He enlisted in the Union army on October 16, 1861, and he mustered in as a sergeant in Company F of the 62nd Ohio Infantry. The regiment took part in the Seven Days’ Battles, the siege of Charleston, the siege of Petersburg, and the Appomattox campaign. He became a quartermaster sergeant on July 1, 1863, and he was promoted to 1st lieutenant on November 18, 1864. He mustered out on August 23, 1865.
 
He settled in Springfield, Ohio, after the war and earned a living as a druggist. By 1870, he owned $3,000 of real estate and $2,000 of personal property. They moved to Zanesville, Ohio, in the 1870s. He died of “complications” in Zanesville on July 2, 1920.
