May 16th 1863
Dear Friends I will write to you once if I am permited to finish but I cant tel when it will be mailed I suppose you kno I am soldering for a liveing I am well and am heavier than I ever was I have saw some hard times and have had some good times I was in the Battle of Perryville, K.Y. on the 8th of Oct 1862 and in a sharp skirmish at Lankester K.Y and we had a march of 23 days we suffered much for water then I was at the fight at Nolansville Dec. 26th we charged on a Rebel baterry and took it and was all through the 7 days fight on Stoneriver Language cant tell the horrible scenes I saw on that Bloody Feald I wont pretend to picture them we had a hard time we lay on the / open feald all the time without fire or blanket part of the time it rained 48 hours at one time we went in the Battle with 45 men in Comp C. we lost 16 wounded 3 killed Dead we lost our Colonel and Lieut Colonel both fell on the 31st our Brigade stood the blunt on that sad morning it lost more men than any other Brigade of the army I came out without a scrach altho I received some close calls they spoiled my pants they shot 3 holes in one leg
well I am 4th Seargent but I have been acting Orderly since the Battle we are campt near the town of Murfreesboro but at this time we are out on the mountain top playing peep with the rebs we have been here 3 days we can see the rebs from us our pickets and theres can talk together I think we will get releaved / tomorrow and go to camp we have lots fun here we are among the rocks and cedars there is plenty of lizards and snakes here it is some fun the boys laying around occasionly one runs up their pants last evening some cows came over the mountain we gave chase and captured one in the road some by the head and some at the switch then 4 milking while engaged the General came along he was laughing and turned his head as he passed we have been sober and gloomy but that wont pay we have lots fun the health of the regiment is good and determined to fight as long as there is rebs North or south
I received a letter from home today our male comes to us wherever we are they are well I will close this and trust you will excuse my poor writeing as i have but a poor chance and poor penn I will try and do better / next time I would like to hear from you if you think worth while to write to me I should be much pleased and will write to you and give the news in general I will close no more at present but remain
