May 6th 1863 Camp
near Murfreesboro, Tennissee
 
Dear Wife I received your letter a few minutes ago and also one from Dave McCeachron wel Ma I am well except a cold I got the other night on picket you kno we have to lay out we were stationed in a large feald and all the fences are goan and it was wet that night so I got a cold but that is nothing
 
I am sorry to hear that Kate is so poorly I was in hopes I would get to see her once more but I suppose I wonte as long as we are threatened here we must stand our ground I had intended to go to see / Alf Mckiney but I could not get a pass to leave then we have to keep on hand 5 days rashions and ready to moove at a moments notice
 
well Mam we have lots of fun here the soldiers have got over the blues and all is right any one that have any spirit in them cant get the dumps we have in our Brigade a good band of music and in our regiment a string band that is a violene banjo tamboreen triangle and bones they can play and sing with any of the shoeman
 
well I have nothing new to write this time only we have new arrangements we have 2 men to cook for the / Company and we have to drill from half after 4 A.M. to six then eat breakfast and rest until 9 then drill 2 hours then at 2 PM until 4 and dressperade at 6 PM so you see they keep us mooveing well you have the scratches wel I scratch some too but it is the lice running on me at night they have drill and they keep a deal of a running you want to kno what kind of lice we have why they are U.S. lice about the size of a wheet grain split intoo they stay in our clothes and one will lay about 50 eggs over night we cant keep clean of them some are carless and the verry ground breeds them I sent my coat scald it well the coffee was all i had then I will try and send more / some other time If you wish annother of my ugly pictures I will get it taken with my arms and accouterments all compleet they take such poor things here I cant suit myself
