May 17th 1863 Camp
Camp near Murfreesboro Tenn
Dear Wife I received your letter yester day just 4 days after it was mailed so it dont take one long to come through I was out in the mountains playing peep with the Rebs they were in sight of us all the time we was to support the Cavelry we had 2 Regiments on the mountain top and 2 tenn pounders Parret guns and 2 regiments back of us for suppoart if attacted but all went off quiet except the lizards they kept a running day and night some times up some ones pants this place is a rocky cedar mountain verry rough full of caves and holes it made it dangerous to walk in the dark / and multitudes of lizards and ugly snakes we staid 3 nights on it today we were releaved by the 3d Brigade some of the boys did not sleep verry well they did not like the lizards running over there faces at night I could do without them rite well but it dont make much difference it appears nothing can hurt the spirits of the 101st anymore we had plenty fun on that God forsaken mountain the second afternoon some cows came across we charged on them and succeeded in captureing one I had her at the horns and nose and 2 more at the switch and 4 done the milking then she was paroled and allowed to pass our lines while the boys was busy holding and milking General Carlen and Staf / came along he turned his head away and laughed and past on said nix all the Generals in Dixey mite pass before they would loose the milk I believe I must close and eat something
I got the Journal and a little letter in it I will send you a nashville paper to day it hante much I will send others as I can I cant get my picture now for my old pocketbook has got some disease you no what I have only 60 cts left it takes 50 cts to get a plug of tobacco that I will have if it would cause the war to stop I think we will get some pay before long if not I will call on you for backer money

Poor Kate I would like to have seen her I will always her cheerfullness and frolicks at our house write often I may write again this week I look for a moove soon one way or the other
