Dear Wife I will send a few lines now to you I am well we are on our way south where to I cant tell we left Murfreesboro the 23d at 5 A.M. and have had some dreadful fighting in the mountains the rebs are stuborn and have to be drove at the point of the beyonet from the mountain passes we have had hard times it has rained every day and night since we left the roads are awful we are laying by today we are in the rear now our army have taken Franklin Manchester and I believe Tullyhoma and / many prisoners we have lost some men only one wounded of our Company our regiment has not been in only one day then only 2 or 3 Companies as skirmishers ours for one we was shooting all day at them and them at us I have saw enough of bloodshead again if it could be helpt our regiment got the praze for our skirmish line as we advanced down the hill to climb another expecting every step a shower of iron hale from above our General said as we started Goodby 101st I fear that is the last of you not a man flinched we got over safe the rebs skedaddled after a few shots we left 15 of there dead unburryed on a hill top we left the wounded / were taken care of
 
            I cant write much now untill we stop again I expect we go to Murfreesborro tomorrow to gard the supply train I dont kno the distance it must bee 30 miles I want you to write as before until I get settled again our male comes after us we are bare of clothing we could not carry our things it so hot and clime mountains I have nothing but the shirt pants blouse hat shoes sock on and my rubber blanket I have not had my clothes dry since we started we have nothing to eat now but meat until a train get up our boys was out and shot a beef and some are goan out now to hunt sumthing / the officers take anything we can get I must close now I will write soon as I can and dare I dare not write particulars now suffise I am safe and sound yet how long it will remain I cant tell
