Charles Morfoot to Elizabeth Morfoot, 23 July 1863
Winchester July 23d 1863
D Wife I again will undertake to penn a few lines to you I am well and hope this may finde you all enjoying the blessing of good health altho I am oneasy about you for I have not received a letter for nearly 3 weeks what is the cause I kno not but I shal continue to write until I kno I feel verry much disapointed every day when the mail comes and nothing for me but I will hoap and wait I have nothing of much importance to write now more than we are still at Winchester yet and some prospects of our staying here to garison some must stay and I hear our Division General Jef C Davis has aplyed for a poast and it is expected we get this it suits my taste I am tired of marching then this is a nice / healthy place plenty good water to drink and a nice stream of running water for bathing.
well we are all in good spirits I think our hard fighting is done our front is clear now our advance is away down in alabam the rebs are down in the mouth around here they say it is no use to contend longer I think Morgans rade in Ohio and Indiana done good it shoes the Butternuts the respect they have for them and aroused the people to a sense of the condition of war I am willing to have some Butternut property destroid in Ohio Perhaps they may do something to help end this trouble the people of the north kno nothing about what soldiers and citizens go through on a cuntry where war exists now we have been here but a short time and the people are flocking in daily for something to eat / they have been robed of every thing to eat by our or the rebel army and today we have nothing but crackers but the railroad is fixed and the cars is running so we may expect plenty again. well the paymaster is here and we will get pay in 1 or 2 days more I dont kno as yet how to send it home if we get this poast I think we may have a chance to get furlows if so I shal try my luck to get one but I hope we will get to come home to stay before long Rosecrans visited all the Hospitals at Nashville last week he told them take courage that they would all be home by Christmas or Newyear time is going rapidly it will soon be one year since I left you I dont care so much if you are all well I would not take one thousand Dollars for what I have saw since I have been working for sam / our work goes hard now it is so hot we drill skirmish drill nearly altogether now I will close this and wate for one from you again Direct Murfreesboro until further orders I have no postages now you may settle for this
Goodby again Charles Morfoot
I have nothing to send in this
