Winchester August 9th 1863
 
Dear wife again I will write while I have the chance for I think we will move soon today the Doctor is examining those that think they are not able to march Rosecrans got valuable information from Brags Chief Artist he came here with maps and drawings of all their works and the cuntry around and other valuable information so I expect we must trot again we got word from our money it is all rite at Gormleys Bank I have but little to write today I got your letter Friday and envelops today is verry warm we had preaching here under the trees by a stranger there is preaching at 4 P.M. and 7 in a large brick church in town and Sundy school in our Brigade at 2 P.M. /
 
I have 2 little hymn books I will send one to Cora I will direct it in her name I mus say I feel glad our boys tries to help along Bully for George he can buy hay I am glad you dont have to live in Dixey for things is so dear and scarce I dont see how the people is going to live I live verry well again but it is too hard on my pocket I get bread at about 25 cts a day I bought some onions yesterday at 5 cts a peas and small at that but when my money is all then I can do without these good things I want you to use that fifty dollars to suit your self live well and hold up your head and hurra for Brough for Governer Down with the traitors up with the stars and we will shout the Battle cry of Freedom that is some of a song is sung here /
 
well Mam I will brag a little myself now there is a weekly repoart of the soldiers takeing 3 of each kind in a company cleanest in person guns tents best conduct and all and the D 3 Dirtyes in all respects and most disobedient I have my name on first Best of every thing I dare not say the dirty ones I will tell you A Stoner is one the rest you dont kno so today I was looking at myself by golly I begin to think I was some my hands are white soft and nice you see I have been in the shade most of the time for 5 weeks I dont go on picket and it is too hot to drill much so all I do is write attend to getting rations clothing &c. call roal and keep things strate I will close this and if we dont move by tommorrow I will write more         C Morfoot /
 
I will finish now I am in a hurry as it is about night and I expect to send this by Wm Hutchison of our company there is 9 of our Regiment going north in the morning after recruits the Colonel wont take Seargents only 6 Corporals and 3 Commisioned so I cant come in I am sorry I would like to go to see you but I will wait patient if I have to stay my time I will try some time for a furlow he may not get home they are to repoart at camp Chase if he takes this it will go through sooner than the mail if he gets there and has time I would like to have my watch if it is good for anything and you have it yet i could sell it well here besides I knead one I have not spoken to him abut it yet I will if he comes after it let him have it we will stay tomorrow anyhow for I just got the order for picket tomorrow but I will stay in camp unless the men are scarse to fill the posts then I go in charge of an outpoast I dont kno of any thing I want but the watch I will close hopeing you are all well as I am                                                       C Morfoot

you knead not send the Journal we get them every week in packages earlyer than you can send them

I learn from good authority we are to have furlows as soon as the drafted men come up to fill the regiments tomorrow our Colonel and 9 others go to Collumbus after men for our Regiments I expect as soon as they come back with their men we get a chance for home if there is no fighting on hand
