April 4th 1864
Dear Wife I again write to you I have delayed writeing a few days waiting your letter we have been without mail for a few days but today it came and your letter in the bargin the delay of our mail was I think caused by a threatning of our trains last Saturday I heard one was attacted between here and Cleveland but I think they got through for they came in here late at night
well Mam I am well and much heavyer than when I was home If we stay here much longer I will be some on the plank road but we have terrible bad wether yet so cold and rainy / I fear things will all freeze here that is fruit peaches were in bloom on the 9th of Feb them are froze I live verry comfortable our shanty is tight and we have a good fireplace our Co is out on picket again I mostly write when they are out then all is still I have letters for nearly all I must take a tramp to the picket line yet today with the maill did you have any April fools there we had plenty here I will tell you how some was fooled some of our Co. got mad the boys would tell one the Lieut called him he would get to his tent and ask what he wanted then come out swearing the Colonel got fooled Cap Fox and Davis was to the depo and wrote a dispatch pretended to come from Lt Colonel McDonald that he would be here on / the next train Colonel was out when the train came past and gave orders to have the men all in line to welcom Mc and many more were fooled you dont understand them rags they are not shirt tails for I dont believe they have any here by the looks of their other clothes I never examined so close to see these Dixy shirt tails dont trouble me I think more of some in America you said something about thing about them jewelry fixins I sent for a vest chain price 15 Dollars I sent 1 Dollar and 15 cts it came it is a nice chain I want to send it home to you in the box it came in and some rings and fixins now if you will please send me some large stamps it will require about 20 cents postage to send it you can keep them they will remind me if I get home of my idle time I spent in Dixy makeing them / I can spend my leasure time makeing rings and other notions of Laurel shell and beef bones I must soon close this as the maile goes out soon I have been so long writeing this since I commenced I had to draw 5 days rations. be carefull of them little girls until they get well

I guess you can finde where this ends anyhow however try
If you want any of them things I will send for a Ladies Onyx and gold Catelina Chain valued at 8 Dollars and 50 cts I cant send until we get paid again as I have but 50 cts left now
