Charles Morfoot to Elizabeth Morfoot, 12 April 1864
Ooltawah East Tenn
Tuesday night April 12th 1864
 
            Dear wife tonight I thought I would write part of a letter to you again if it is but a short time since I did write you kno if my minde is full and I cant talk to you only by letter I have to write often and tonight I am alone again as our Co is on picket every Tuesday well today I spent makeing that ring I have it finished yes I red 180 pages in a book one of our library books today there has been considerable cavelry passed they say there will be 8 or 10 Regiment along in a few days I heard the / 12th was on the way from Nashville if they come this way they pass in 40 roods of our camp if I find when they pass I will be down at the road they mostly camp over night here the cavelry going east them that passed here today is campt inside our pickets if the 12th comes Jef can get to see our camp town these Cavelry are going to Cleveland 15 miles from here I have but little news one thing I forgot to mention before there has been a women pedling around the camps some suspisioned her loyalty she has been watched and found to get papers and other things and carry to the Rebs she was arrested as a spy and today had hur trial I understand they proved all the charges / against hur I wont be surprised if she gets hemt for hur trouble I must tell the fun we had in camp tonight we got beef this evening Co. I. got a large flank about larg and thin enough for a leather apron they commenced throwing it in 10 minutes the half the Regiment was at work some times 3 or 4 got hold then every one grab hold of the men then pull Dick pull Devil until the hold broke then down went the lot some of the officers got it around their ears no one looked where or who he hit ther was yelling and laughing enough to las a month it is bedtime the bugle has sounded for bed time so I will clost for tonight /
 
            wednesday morning breakfast over I will finish I will give Jake Shearmans address as he gave it to me I wrote to him but have no answer he got yours and my adress from you

now for some more shirt tail I call it some of our old flag it is getting ragged it got badly riddled at Chickamauga it looks hard but we dont value it the less for that this piece I confiscated just to keep to remember the flag of our regiment that we followed in the hard battles it fell to the ground 3 times on the 19th of Sept 1863 its bearers being shot this piece is a slivver toar by a piece of shell and the wind made it more so so I toar it off I believe I have wrote enough this time so goodby
