Altona Mountains Georgia
Dear Wife Tonight I will write by a dim fire light a few lines as the mail goes back at 6 in the morning and I suppose there is much anxiety at this time I am well as could be expected we are in the midst of Battle and have been for several days this is a dreadful time this beats all I ever saw yet we are still gaining ground we are now at Dalis one part of our army we have lost a great many men some of the Ohio Regiments are badly cut up the 49th and 64 the 49th lost 102 night before last kiled and wounded today one of our Corps killed and wounded 25 hundread Rebes that fell in our hands I got a letter from Jef he is well and on the way to Knoxville /
it is so dark I cant see I dont kno what to write I am tired of fighting it is hard I tell you to see so many poor fellows shot down I hope to god this will be the last fighting we have short rations now I expect tomorrow or next day there will be an awful Battle they have a strong position among these mountains we have lost none of our Co since I last wrote 2 are back sick a few miles so we have but 14 left tel the friends if I have any that I am in this great Campaign and would rather be out if I could but my lot is cast among the rest and I may fall with them or stand to victory I must close write to Jef and me often no more now

this is rather a mixed up letter but excuse me this time you cant expect much elce at such a time as this lying in the pine thicket dodgeing shells occasionly they are handing it to the Rebs on our right by the sound of the Cannon
write verry often so if we get out of this job of Uncle sams I can hear from
Gods Cuntry often
