July 16th 1864 Camp south side of
Chattahoochee River Georgia
 
Dear Wife this morning I feel like writeing a little to you again so here goes first I am well next I hope you are all well I hardly kno what to write as there is nothing new we are yet here on this mountain backboan hardly wide enough to turn a waggon on the ridge then goes down ¼ of a mile to the river and down in a ravine the other side this is the way this cuntry is all over on these ridges we have erected brestworks I dont kno why we lay quiet here so long I think something important working there dont appear to be any rebs near us all is still on front of us well the repoart is we will get pay here soon I cant see it thursday night at dark we had a storm it blew and rained hard our shade blew down on our pup tents so we had to get out and remove the poles and brush so we got well soaked and the rain blew under our tents and wet our leaves and blankets so I lay in the wet leaves and wet blanket but last night I slept good all dry and nice I have put some stuff we call Elephant Dung on the fire in my pail to boil soup for dinner the men are some gon to wash some after berryes some writing some asleep I have a ring I made at Funnel hill and have been wearing it since now I will send it and you may wear it in peace I have wore it through all our fighting I will rub it up so it is good as new / that gold ring I have I hante wore it on this campaign but I will now until I can make another one when we get over this campaign and get in camp I intend makeing one for you a Perchy one with gold sets in this one I made when I was not well and I had only one file I will send some of this Isenglass it is plenty here as half the earth is of it and the stones is full this you can split and make as many pieces as you like I will close and wait until evening as the mail dont go out until night
 
well a fool for luck I just got 2 sheats of paper big as a blanket now I can write some more letters I have ate my soup and will write some more luck seems to attend me I got a plug of tobacco today but it tastes of cash 75 cts for a plug such as I used to get at Bucyrus for 10 cts paper 2 cts a sheat 2 cts for a envelop I can spend money faster than earn it I spent the last cent again today well it is so hot I cant stand it in my tent I must get in the shade of some trees my shirt is so ragged the sun burns if I dont have my blouse on but that makes nothing I will close this I expect a letter from somebody tonight so Goodby                 from                            C.
