Near Rome Georgia
Dear wife I now will pen a few lines to you as I had no opertunity for some time and I cant tell when I can send this I am well and able for all my grub and more too well we had sudden orders to march I was writing an answer to yours of the 17th of Sept and at 12 Oclock at night orders came to march at daylight we have been on the trot ever since Hoods Army is between us and Chattanooga we are heading them from the Railroad and pushing their rear I think the old chap has got in a bad scrape they will soon get hungry they tried to capture Altoona Pass but got licked / we had one million rations there they next reached Rome yesterday demanded a surrender and was told nix comerous but got a few shells sent them they passed on and I hear canon frequent today Kilpatrick is pushing them we are lying still today we run out half the army yesterday they are comeing in they were scattered in fence corners and in the mountains the waggon train is not all up yet well I cant say wher we go I expect still farther North we got a mail at Kingston I got one letter from you and 50cts in money we are not paid and wont until this scrape is settled I am sorry for I want you / to have the money

I could not finish we had to march now I am in a valey not far from the Lookout Mountain range and our course now is I think toward Alabama after the rebs Dont be alarmed for us if our Railroad is destroyed we are now 16 miles west of it and north of Rome the train is going to Chattanooga tonight and I expect to send this I am well and harty I stand the march well I send you a few seeds of the Sensative plant I got them on Pine Mountain wher General Polk was killed save them and plant them it is a nice thing it is viney the leaves close up if one touches them / and a verry nice flour I have some Nigger Peas and a new kind of cane seed I will send some other time I must close this as the letters is to go out in a few minutes I cant give particulars until we stop if ever we expect a big tramp ahead we have travaeled over 150 miles since we left Atlanta and many ar barefooted I have good shoes but my socks are worn out entirly my other clothes are good so Goodby
