December 30th 1864
Near Lexington Alabama
Dear Wife I will write perhaps I may get a chance to mail it some time well I am well we have reached a little one horse town here in the woods we have drove Hood 115 miles from Nashville he has succeeded in getting across the Tennissee River at the Shoals 16 miles from here but he has destroyd most of his train as burnt waggons are scattered for 40 miles back and amunition any amount of it so we have been here all day yesterday and now it is noon but the joke is we are out of grub I got some corn yesterday from the pack mules but today they have none so I cant rob them our train is back I expect / in the mud as it is the worst kind of roads we have had a hard time of it it has rained most of the time when not raining it was cold we are waiting orders from Thomas there is but our Corps and some Cavelry on this road the rest are on different routs I dont kno where we will go but I think our campaign is over for this winter we will be sent to some point to winter there are various opinions where it will be som think some place on the river some at Pulaski some at Collumbia others at Nashville I dont care where so it is a good place and handy for mail Hood wont bother us soon again one thing looks hard I have saw a great many dead / rebs lying by the road side as we passed along the Cavelry are always in advance and skirmishing with their rear if they shoot one they lay him beside the road and cover him with his blanket if he has one if not lay his hat over his face I dont think our men bury them well I will try if I can get an ear of corn to parch my belly is getting slim we look for rations tonight but I fear they wont come the Comisary waggon came up they had some poark and sugar for officers I got a pound of poark and one of sugar poark costs 22cts shugar 20 coffee I make of parched corn but all right better days are comeing I will close this and if I get notice in time of mail I will write more Goodby

arrived here today this goes out at 8 tonight so I will only mention this I am well we expect to stay here this winter I will write when I get my shanty up
