Dear Mother
i sit doun this morning to let you know that i got a fiew letters the other day some old ones that was laying at Lexington the five dollars and another letter from Frank and George and you that had a lot of stamps in i was glad to get a letter once a gain i dident have a letter fore more than a month before i got five in one bunch one from you and george and Frank another from frank another from you with the money in one from Mary Boyer and one other besides i tell you i had a lot of them to read. /
 
Well i must say that i am well and the company with the exception of corporal Songer my old tent mate was wounded in a skirmish the other day Saturday he was shot in the right knee with a revolver the rebs was so clost that when the shot i counted i wasent on the skout i went to the blacksmith shop to get my horse shod and before i got back thirty seven of our company went out they met a squad of about thirty rebs they came on each other before they was aware of what they were doing but our boys was ready for them our boys killed there captain they run for life and our boys after them but the had fresh horses and our horses was run doun / so they got in the mountains and go lost from us. Songer is hurt pretty bad the doctor said that his leg wouldent have to be taken off but it would make him a stiff knee and that he wouldent be fit for the survice any more wee dont do any thing but skouting wee are here as General hobsons body guarde and wee dont have any thing to do so wee put in our time in skouting. the Regiment is at winchester between Lexington and Mt Serling. i havent heared from pap since the middle of last month i am ancous to heare wheather he is alive and well i have had extraordinary good helth this summere right side up and always ready for / a skout. that captain that the boys killed they say he was the most noted garila in the state and has done more harm than any other rebs in the state. Gen. Hobson thinks it was a big thing he thinks a good deal of our company. well i cant write much longer or it will be to late for the mail i hope that this will find you well and right sid up with the coperheads so good by write soon and let me know what is going on there from your lazy son in the 12th Cavalry
