Camp near Atlanta
July 31 1864
Dear Father;
All has went well with is since my last writing July 26.
Another desperate battle was fought here on the 28th. The Army of the Tennessee has done the fighting since we crossed the Chattahoochie.
The enemy will I think now defend Atlanta to the last and I dont think we will get the city during our stay at the front I think three or four weeks will start / us home for Indiana.
We have good weather. The rebels opened on us yesterday with 64 lb guns I tell you they make us go for our holes in the ground. We are close enough to the city to see the extent of the fortifications they are very heavy and I dont think can be taken by direct assault. The health of the boys is good.
I will write you soon again.
I see a letter from Col Kise which if Capt Cobb had not declined he would have been our next treasurer and says he perhaps he will be any way. Write me soon
Tom Cobb /
The enemy fought with desperation. they assaulted our lines and were slaughtered by the hundreds while it is a remarkable fact that our loss was almost nothing. the rebels were drunk.
Col Taylor of our Regt has been offered a cavalry Regt and he wants me to be his Lt Col. I think I had better stay out of the Army. What do you think of it. If I accept it will only be to resign it before quitting Indianapolis for the field. I guess I had better decline it. I enclose a letter from my old friend Ensminger. see his advice, let mother preserve the letter. / dont forget to write me soon and give me the news. I also enclose other letters for mother.
My Respects to all
Tell Nancy my best wishes for her marriage day and that we are highly pleased with our proposed new brother
