I have not been able to learn the particulars of the fight but we lost a good many men the Rebs greatly outnumbered us. Our loss will probably exceed a thousand. our forces had to fall back but they are not going to give it up so they are bringing troops from the Head almost currently every day probably another Battle we be fought in a few days. the news of it raised quite an excitement around here. We some expected an attack here and we were poorly prepared for defence we having so few men it comes rather tough on those that are here, and then we cant half do the duty, but I think the danger for us is about past. think the Rebs will cross the River. Refugees and Deserters are coming every few days. they tell pitiful stories. the people in the country are in a miserable condition are heartyly sick of the war, in fact they are completely destitute. Once a week we allow them to come to our lines and bring what they have to sell such as sweet potatoes venison &c We exchange with them for commissary stores. the trading is done under the supervision of the Provost Marshal. it is a busey day for him. I shall not be able to answer your letters in this as the mail closes very soon. we send it to Jacksonville. I shall have time to write more after this. I am a long way behind however. I am feeling better this morning. the weather is beautiful. Miss Foot and Miss Moore left in the last Boat for the north also Miss Hanby. please hurry my clothes along as I am in need of them / now. I am glad to hear Elbert has got home. Give my love to all. Give Benim a kiss from his pa pa.
