Joseph F. Daugherty
Joseph F. Daugherty was born on April 27, 1813, in Ohio to William and Mary Daugherty. He moved to Indianapolis around 1834 and worked at a dry goods store. He moved to Boone County around 1836, and he married Mariah Campbell on January 24, 1838. They had at least five children: Mary, born around 1839; William, born on July 14, 1840; Frances, born around 1845; Louisa, born around 1847; and Joseph, born around 1849. He worked as a merchant in Boone County, and by 1850, he owned $1,000 of real estate.

According to an early biographer, he was “alive to all political questions of the day.” He supported the Whig Party, and he voted for President William Henry Harrison in 1840. He reportedly “cast votes for seventeen Presidents.” He became a Republican in the 1850s, and he attended multiple Republican State Conventions. By 1870, he was working as a farmer in Clay, Indiana, and he owned $5,000 of real estate and $600 of personal property. They moved to Indianapolis in the 1870s, and he died of pneumonia there on January 26, 1903.
