Jane Hughes Statement, undated
Secession

South Carolina has always been considered a state for talk & nothing else Now, that the crisis has arrived, I hope she will secede, & thereby show that she can act as well as talk. All the Southern States are looking to her to lead & Charleston whoich represents the sentiment & greatest interest of the state, has threatened to revolutionize, whether the state secedes or not The time for set phrases is at an end, the time for action has arrived, every one must express themselves himself, this is no time now for political arguments, there must be union of sentiment, & that union rednerd to one point, separate / state action. If Carolina does not secede, I, for one, would be ashamed of what I am now so proud,--that of being I am a native of our gallant & high spirited little state. if she fails to secede & that immediately. In 1852, when the state was about to secede, a great many persons moved out of the state it &, being asked why they were leaving Carolina, said they were going to a state in which their property would be secure for they did not know what these hot-headed secessionists were going to do. There are a few of such people still to be found. all they want is to make monney, & they call us hot-headed secessionists without taking time to know the cause of secession. / "They who would be free themselves, must be the first to strike the blow."
