Adaline K. Clapp to (?) Chauncey, 22 July 1861
Dahlonega July 22ond, 1861

Dear Dr Chauncey

It has been A long time since I received your letter but I trust you will forgive me for this neglect if I will do better in future which I will endeavor to do

We have had good health this season our crop of wheat is light the boys will finish it to day they have A few days work yet to do in their corn and then they will lay it by it looks fine is now tasseling out think we shall have A good crop, but as it now is, it will bring very little or nothing. We have had A / man until this week shall not want to hire any more this summer. The Illinois money is very near worthless here while I was in Ohio P went to the bank to deposit what we had on hand they told him he must receive just such money again as he deposited so he thought he might as well keep it we had $49 that was down. I have not heard any thing from Mrs Given lately think we shall be able to pay her some this fall or winter I have not heard any thing from Summers on that note since I returned home John Gossage has written home that he expects to return this fall and hopes to come prepared to cancel all his indebtedness

Lovina husband left for war two weeks since he is an officer in the 6th rigament from Iowa I do not know whether she will come home to stay, or not. Philo and Dennie are going to see her next week she is well provided for but I think she will be very lonely and I would rather she would come home I have not heard from Mother since she left Columbus I must write to her but I am so negligent about writing Charlie and Clarra are attending school Oran will commence next week and go while the school continues We are going to have some apples wild fruit is very abundant here this season butter is from 5 to 8 cents per pound eggs 3 to 5 doz wheat from / 35 to 50 cts per bushel new potatoes 50 cts cheese 8 to 10 per pound I am making some this summer. I hope the war will soon close but fear not our papers are full of war news every week and it has made money very scarce with us

The locus has become very thick here and on some farms the army worm followed and took almost every thing they did not trouble us at all

I must close with kind regard to all    Yours Truly
                                                                                    A. K. Clapp
