William Troyer to Ione Troyer, 17 October 1864
At Smoke Creek Gap
15 miles N.W. of Resacca
Oct 17th 1 P.M. 1864
Dear and loving Ina,
I am well, have nothing very special to write. I wrote a short letter a few days ago while I was at Rome, and directed the same to mother thinking you might have went home. We stoped over night at Rome (which is a bout as large as Geneseo) then marched went the next day west 7 miles. the cavalry that were in the advance charged a reb battery and took perhaps 30 prisonors and two cannon. 2 or 3 of our men were killed. I did not state in my last our loss at Altona it was about 600. We / returned the same day to Rome stoped over night. Revilee was played at 4 in the morning all hands and kooks were up. by the way nearly evry man is a kook. we soon have our breakfast and ready for the march at 6. it is 28 miles from Rome to Resacca. I have not seen a wild or loose reb from the one fisted farmers since I left Decator. Yet 2 A.C. passed over the ground near where I am now, day before yesterday. Perhaps we will stop here until tomorrow. I have no idea which way we will go when we leave here. We ar still getting a plenty of rations. On the account of the R.R. being cut we do not get any news. I presume you will be at home by the time this arrives this is the second time we have had a chance to send mail since about the middle of Sep.
