George M. Mellersh was born on November 24, 1836, in England. He immigrated to America around 1850 and settled in Tennessee. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1855 and served as a sergeant in Company K of the 9th United States Infantry. He mustered out in 1858. He married Elizabeth James in 1858, and they had at least five children: Fannie, born around 1866; Georgie, born around 1868; George, born around 1870; Cyrene, born around 1873; and Bessie, born around 1876. They lived in Memphis, Tennessee, and Mellersh worked as a bookkeeper. By 1860, he owned $300 of personal property.
In the spring of 1861, he received a commission as captain of Company E of the 154th Tennessee Infantry, and he served until at least May 1862.
He returned to Memphis after leaving the army, and he supported the Democratic Party. He moved to Dallas, Texas, in the 1870s, and he earned a living as a lumber dealer. His wife died on May 5, 1895. He married a woman named Mary around 1898. By 1900, they were living in Terrell, Texas. He died of apoplexy in Dallas on August 12, 1910.
