Camp of 31st Reg Miss June the 16th 1862
Dear Sister
I received your letter some time ago & I have not had time to answer untill now we have been marching a good deal and expect to march a good deal more we have camped here a few days on the Memphis & Charleston R. Road I suppose to guard the Meckanick while they build some bridges that the Rebels have destroyed we have Orders to march to morrow morning & I have no Idea whare our destination will be I saw the 22 Ind vol 24 miles south of Corrinth I saw Jo but only got to speak a few words to him as we were passing by he looks pretty bad but he says he is getting better I dont know that I will se him soon again as we are some 40 miles from whare they were encamped James Bennette received a letter from Carter that stated Jo Lucases Mother was dead Jo is in a great deal of trouble I have heard that Wesley Pulley is dead a you / he belonged to our company and was wounded at the Pitsburgh one the first day of the fight you know him I guess he is from Brown County and his Mother is a widow I am sorrow to hear of his death he was splendid boy You wrote something about Bil Berry talking about me I had heard it before in Ervins letter I dont care for any thing he can say I dont suppose he is thought anything of at home and I know there is not a man in our Comp wants him to come back Havens it is to late for him to come back now as his coming back wouldent save him from being mustered out of the Service Jo Wolesy came back a few days ago he told me all about what Berry had been saying the men of our company have swore vengeance against him if they get back he will have a hard time of it I would like to se him over it my self for his whole story about me was unfounded I was going according to the orders of our Colonel & if the Colonel had of obeyed / me we would of taken the men back but he would not let me or the men go back as regards the fight that Berry was in was nothing more than a skirmish for our men dident fire no oftener than twice apiece Capt McCalla swears he shant have his place in the Company again though there is no danger of him coming back the thing that gets me is to think of some men who pretend to be friends to me when I was at home was ready ont on the the reception of Berrys news to make a blow out of what he had told these men will be remembered by me when I get back if ever I do you wanted to know something about Dave Hackney Dave has been sick a good deal but is with us now and is able for duty he has been complaining of his breast and there was a while I dident think he would ever get up again but his health is improveing I am in pretty good health at presant and I think I will remain so awhile / as we have splendid watter something we have not had until we got in these parts since we came into the Service
