Camp White Oak Church, Va. May 14th 1863
1st Regt N.J. Volunteers.
 
Dear Brother
                        I take this opportunity of answering your last letter which I received some fiew days cince but have not had time to write I received it while on the last march and I have not mutch time to write at such times, therfor I feel in hopes you will excuse me this time. you had your letter directed wrong and it was some sixteen days coming to me. I will give you the proper directions in this.
 
Thomas I have no news of any importance to give you at presant as I suppose you have heard all about our last marches and engagements with the enemy near at or near Fredrickburg and the results So it is not nessesary for me to give you any farther acount of the affaire in this 
 
we got back to our olde Camp on the 10th inst what fiew there is left off us. we lost just one half of our Company in the ingagement at Salem Church on Sunday the 3d of May The ingagement was short but very severe while it lasted I doant suppose we was in at the most over half hour.
 
This morning we had Company drill for the first cince we came back, and all the men that I could rais was four privates two Corpls one Sergeant. we still have for duty 14 men in the company 18 abcent sick and wounded you spoke spok about my forgeting to come home this spring I have not forgotten it yet and intend coming soon if nothing happens my furlough had aught to bin in this morning but did not come through some mistake or other but I think it will be in soon. There was six lef for home this morning. As I have no news to write I shall have to bring this to a close by stating that I am well and in good health and hope this will finde / you all engoying the same blesing I have not writen to Sylvester Drake yet but shall as soon as I can finde time I do not have mutch time to spare cince I am Orderley. it keeps me prittey buisey at all times.
 
I saw the moste of the Stewarts Ville boys the other day they are laying close by us now cince we came back. they are all well but John Wheeler he is quite sick and looks bad.
