Dear Brother
I have the honor to acknoledg the receipt of your kind and welcom note of the 7th which came to hand in doe time. I was much pleased to here from you and that you waire all well. yours found me O.K. as fare as health is concerned, and my wound getting along as well as can bee expected but it will bee some time yet befor it gets well. it was a prettey severe one the wound is long and deep and a part of the skull carred away, but I will get along if I take care of myself
You wanted to know how long I was fighting before it happened. I had bin fighting ten days every day more or les. on the tenth day in the afternoon I waire skrimishing with the enemy on the bank of the Po River I was commanding the company the Lieutenant being killed in the Wilderness on the 6th and the Captain on the twelvth near Spotsylvania. I was ordered to advance and rout the enemys skrimishers on the opposite side and just as I got to the bank they let me down. The 2nd Sergt is in command now or was when I left I havent herd from them since i left. talk about fighting I never saw such fighting in my life as the army had this spring they fought day and night while I was with them and have since by what I can here. but I hope it will soon bee over for I am getting tired of it, and think its time I must now think of closing for this time for I am not / humor for writing at presant. I am poisened so I can hardley sit still, and my hands are swolen so I can hardley hold my pen I caut it laying around in the bushes so much I suppose for wee waire compelled to lye down any waire and in any thing some times when we waire fighting
I shall try and get up home as soon as I get some money. I am out intirley at presant. Ive had no pay since I re-enlisted I have nearley three Hundred Dollars coming but cant get it now untill the 1st of July so I shall have to wate. As I have no news of importance to write this time I will wind up hoping to here from you soon again give my respects to Jane and Tomps and tell them I am glad to here they are living yet. I thought they waire dead. I had a letter from cousin Henrey Carter the other day stating that Aunt Betty Hagerman waire dead. hoping this may find you all as well as it leaves me, I remain as ever your affectinate brother and well wisher
