Emma Lathrop and John W. Lathrop to Timothy D. Root, 17 April 1864
Austinburg April 17th 1864
Dear Absent Friend
Your letter arrived and found us all in good health and when this reaches you I hope it will find you enjoying the same I went to church to day and heard Mr Barber preach his farewell sermon there was no services this afternoon he went to Eagleville to preach young Henry Webbs wife's funeral sermon it seems to me most all the young men that used to be here to go to church have gone into the army. Cornelia Cowles was married two or three weeks ago to a Mr Folles of Warren I think Dwight your letter was rather flattering which I shall not allow at all and as for that bird by the name of Emma I am not acquainted with her. we are going to Winslow the fore part of this week and I / expect to have a very good time Henry Stahl has been very sick so sick that they did not expect him to live but he is nearly well now Belle Mills felt so bully about it that she came near committing suicide she was going to singing school the night after she heard about Henry's sickness and as she came to a little puddle of water she made the expression "Oh that I could drown my self in those waters and not know any thing more about it" it was very distressing to see her grief and we did not know then but she would pine her self away to a hundred and fifty or more but since she has heard that he is better she is more composed and she may possibly survive the shock I think her reason is not impaired I am very glad that you are enjoying your self and have good houses to live in where you are and I hope that the time will soon come when / you can be at home with your friends mother says she hopes you are enjoying good health and that you must be a good boy and come as soon as possible your father was over here last week to see about sending a box to you if one is sent we shall be sure to send a little hoping that you will write soon I remain your sincere friend

aware of what society most of
