Dear Drape
Your last recd I have not recd the letters you speak of or should have responded. I shall allways feel greatful to your Father for the interest he has taken in my wellfare, from childhood to the present. I do not think however that any thing can be done more than has been for the benefit of the application. The "parlor knights" who dispence those favors cannot see how a man capable of filling the position sought can after 3 years service still be in ranks. So let it be. I am at Div Hd Qrs as Clerk in the AAGenls Office. It is decidedly the best position in the field for a soldier, and I intend to keep it until something turns up either to take me away from the army or promote me enough to justify me in abandoning so / so pleasant a position. We are having a fine time now, have plenty to eat, and are farther from the blue bellies than at any time since entering the service, no Yankees nearer than thirty miles. It is a very remarkable fact that the Texas Brigade should be taken from the front, but suppose such disposition is only temporary.

What did they send the list to Maj Genl Gilmore for? Was it to frighten him away from Charleston? Or is he not the Yank? I expect from the good to be accomplished by such proceeding it might as well be sent per flag of truce to King Abe.

Hav'nt had a drink for 6 Mo what do you think of that. Not because I didnt want it, but could'nt be had. I did see some at Zollicoffers on the march to this point, and I and Rimes my chum had out 50¢ to pay / for a qt. when he refused to take the old currency.

I wish I knew how to interest you. If I did I would write you a long letter, but having nothing in the way of news, will close by requesting you to comply and respond to my good intentions on that particular. Your news from home was anticipated in a letter recd from Mr. Jas Burnett a day or two ago but am nevertheless obliged and hope you will give me in your next all the news from there as late as three or four months, as I have heard nothing, save as to my fathers wellfare, since that time.

                                    Very Respy & truly
                                                            Your friend
                                                                        C. M. Cally

P.S
How is your Cousin Tom Adams He ought to come out here and get the appt. of A.A.G-(?) My love to Neal
                                                Charlie
