June the 9th 62
Ackworth Georgia

Dear sister I seat myself to write to you once more and to let you know that I am well and enjoying myself as well as could be expected I received a letter from you while on the march to this place and this is the first opportunity I have had of answering it we have been marching since the 25 of May untill yesterday when we arrived at this place we are about 40 miles from Atlanta the great rebel stronghold we are on the left wing of Gen. Shermans army there has been considerable fighting on the right of our army but for the last few days there has been nothing done there is an / immense army here probably the largest ever seen in the west the country is very rough and mountainous making it very difficult marching the weather is very warm and dry but there is an abundance of mountain streams from which we get our water. Well it is so warm and I am so lazy that I hardly know what to write I should like to stop in to old Maneka and see how you get along teaching the young idea how to shout I have no doubt you make a famous schoolman of one though I am certain that you are cross enough but enough about school I want you when you write to give me all the news you have no idea / of the pleasure it gives me to get a letter from home you have plenty of time to write while I must write when I get the chance I will write as often as I can and you must do the same

Give my respects to all the friends I saw [?] yesterday he is well and hearty my love to all write soon
                                                                                                Ed. Mac
