Edward Hickman to Mary Hickman, 8 October 1862
Camp Defiance, Cairo, Oct. 8th 1862.

Dear Wife:—
I arrived in Cairo at about 6 oclock yesterday P.M. There is a great deal of sickness in Cairo now. The small pox is in town. It is said that there is about 20 deaths daily. But I am well through the blessing of God. If the Lord, in his divine Providence sees fit to afflict me in any manner, I will endeavor to put my whole trust in him & He will preserve me.

We expect to go somewhere South in a few days. I have not time to write much now. Give my love to all, and write soon.
