Albert H. Pierson to Julia A. Pierson, 15 November 1863
McDougall Gen Hospital

Dear Sister Julia
I recd your welcome letter yesterday with much pleasure, and it brought to me much news of various kinds, of sickness and even death, but glad to hear that it hasn't entered our circle. I was surprised to hear that William H Church was home on a furlough, but still more so to hear that W Johnson / was home on one also.
I am glad that they have been so lucky. I like to hear of other folks getting home, and enjoying themselves for a short time, even if I cannot be blest with that privelege myself. still I live in hopes of by and by's granting me the same privelege of seeing my friends in the far distant west. My wound dosen't seem to get much better. you are it seems under the impression that it has been healed over once, it is not so, it is nearly as large as it was when Father and Mother were here, and has been about the same size ever since. it was healed over about an inch and a half at the top, that is where it is now breaking out. it is a little larger than a ten cent piece. I have kept very still for 6 weeks, so you / see my going around hasn't iritated it enough to cause it to break out again. the bone might of been partially injured which caused it to break out again. still I dont know as that is the case. You have already heard how unfortunate Mrs. Eastman and A. C. Van Epps & wife were in comeing to see me. Uncle Isaac Van Epps and wife came here to see me a week ago yesterday. they brought me the things that our folks sent me, which I thank you all very much for, the chestnuts & hickory-nut meats were excelent. I think it took you some time to pick out those hickory-nut meats. I would like to of been helping you, but I had the pleasure of eating them which had to do as well this time. Did you go to Clifton last week as you spoke of in your letter. I would like to of been home so as to see Wm Church & Wyman Johnson. I sent $20.00 home in my last letter. you did not say wether you recd it or not.
I must now close Give my respects to enquiring friends and write soon to
Your Aff'ct brother
Albert
