Dear Sister Julia
Yours of 17th inst came to hand in due time after date, and was recd with much pleasure. I assure you I am very grateful to you for your long and well written letter.
I can see a decided improvement in your writing lately, which is very satisfactory. I have not heard from home in three week. I reckon I will give Miss Lottie a lecture when I hear / from her again. She isnt as prompt in answering as you were when home. I suppose she has to work pretty hard now you are away, so we musnt be quit so hard on her. You speak of your time being so limited that you have scarsely time to answer your letters. I know how that goes exactly, from experience away from home at school.
Well Miss Jul, I have been to the City, recd a pass last Friday. I visited the Sanitary Fair while there. I would of given most anything to of had the pleasure of having your company at the time. I cannot even attempt to discribe the many things that were there to be seen. I suppose you can form some idea of things that were exibited there, having visited one similar to it at that place, only this was on a much larger scale. everything of almost of every discription was / there to be seen. the Fair was almost entirely superintended by the Ladies. many thanks to those Ladies who are doing so much for the poor soldiers it isnt expected that they will marshal themselves in battle array for that is greatly out of her sphere, but their are many ways that she can display her patriotism, and in a more comely manner. The fair is in two two seperate buildings, and consists of many departments. I have a catalogue of merely one department which I am going to send you. please preserve it. I had an excellent time in the city. My wound is doing finely at present. I cannot send you a picture this time Jul, I didn't get them taken this time. There is to be a Photograph Gallery started here soon. I am waiting until that is started. if you have yours taken, please send me one. Jul I was much surprised with some of the contents of your letter. / I thought that that you had given an affirmative answer, or at least that is what I expected. perhaps he thought because a decided answer wasnt given, that he was going to get the mitten, and would recall his proposition, and if you give him to understand at the time that all was right, perhaps it wasnt clear in his mind because a decided answer wasnt obtained. It is my opinion that you intended to except, but his but it wasnt in any hurry to do so, and that his question to recall his proposition so surprised you that you gave him a different answer than was intended. still he ought not to of expected a decided answer just as quick as he poped the qu but of had patients, until you pondered & considered it fully It is as say "Love runs in many strange Channels, and when given in earnest ought not to be trifled with, excuse me if I have sa for giving my opinion, for it wasnt called for. & pardon me if I have said any-thing to hurt your feelings. Jul please give me Nellie Lewis's directions a little more fully. if I am here a month from now and can get a 48 hours pass I may possibly give her a call which would give me much pleasure. Give my respects to Maggie. tell her I shall write her soon. when I recd your letter, at first sight I thought it was from her, because she directed it but the contents revealed another persons penmanship.
I must now close hoping to hear from you soon
write soon to your brother
