Louisa A. Walker to Enos Reed, 18 September 1864
Black Oak Pt Iowa Sept 18th 1864
My Dear Husband
I have just been peruseing letter no 28 for the third time. that poem about home is very good and very true and one which every soldier who has a good wife at home should appreciate I was sory to hear that the Rebs were so buisily engaged shelling your your camp, but was glad to here that you were afterwards shelling the Ft so briskly that they had desisted and appeard to be taken entirely by surprise.
Harv has gone up to Litten's to play with Billy, and I am alone today. (that is if I do not call Ollie any body) she has got on a new pair of shoes, and she is awful proud of them. it is the first pair of heavy shoes she ever wore and she seems to be proud because she can make a noise when she walks. I wish you could her steping around. We had a little shower of rain yesterday it is clear today / and cold enough to make my fingers so numb that I can not hold the pen very well. If the wind falls and it keeps clear we will have a big frost tonight.
George and Puss Walker started home last monday. We have heard nothing more from Liggins folks yet. We have not heard from Cyrus for some time. Pap talks of going to Jefferson to get a load of apples this fall. Harv says that he would like to go and get a load if he could leave home, but he is going to put the hogs up and when he gets them up he can do nothing else but attend to them, for if it does not rain enough to rais the creek he will have to haul water for them from Jim Molesworths. I promised to write to write to Cooney today and I have nothing new to write, so I will only write a half sheet this time. Harv has not been very well for a week but I guess he is getting about right again. Ethel has had the diarrhea pretty bad but I saw all of them at Paps yesterday and Mead said she was getting better. hopeing to hear from you soon again I subscribe myself as ever your loveing wife L A Reed
