Oscar E. Tuthill
Oscar E. Tuthill was born on October 30, 1847, in Smyrna, New York, to Ziba and Harriet Tuthill. His father was a farmer who owned $400 of real estate by 1850. He grew up and attended school in Smyrna.
 
He enlisted in the Union army on January 8, 1864, and he mustered in as a private in Company H of the 5th New York Heavy Artillery later that day. According to his service records, he was 5 feet, 10 ¼ inches tall, with brown hair and brown eyes. Confederate forces captured him on October 19, 1864, near Cedar Creek, Virginia. He was paroled in March 1865, and he died in Smyrna on March 27, 1865.
