Camp Gambrel June the 14th 1863
 
My Dear Wife I am blest with the privolig of adressing you a fiew lins in ansor to yours which I read with pleasure I was glad to hear from you and glad to hear that you and the children was well and doing well I am in good helth at this time and I truley hope when those lins comes to hand tha will find you and the children well and doing well If I was with you I cold tell you a [paper hole] kind but I dont now when I will get to come to see you if wee stay hear or if wee dont go south I hav the promis to come home as soon as my time comes I dont exspect I will get to come before the last of July or the first of August /
 
Wee are all well wee hav a tolerbel good place where we are in Camp wee hav to go on garde every other day wee com off one day and go on the next wee gard the prisnors we seen bill dannels and he said John T hughes was killed at the peoria grove fite last wintter and bob whittel was kild at the last fite at Spring field in Mo and John Roberts was also kild thare danels was was old Mintchels son anlaw he is took off for to be changed [paper hole] d took [paper hole] Virginia to Citey point [paper hole] Rebl Hughs is dead
 
Rittey Ann I am in good hart I am satisfied that wee are on the rite caus and that we will whip the Rebls and restore the union wee are shure to gane a victory at vicksburgh and port hudson / too Grant has vicksburg surounded and banks has poart hudson surounded harvey Littler is hear with us to day and he was took prisnor at vicksburgh and tha kep him 4 days and paroled him and he said Grant had the hole place surounded and tha had no way to get out before he left thare harvey said Grant was shore to take the place just as wee was a live he said he heard our officers say that Grant said he cold take [paper hole] time [paper hole] did not want to slawter his men up in that way he wold take the place by seag harvey said the rebls told him tha was vary shoart of suplies and all tha had to eat was coarn meal Old Jeff davis says if tha loes / them too plases the Sutheren Confedrecy is tore in too and i think it will tare worse yet i think it will tare and be so fare a part that Old Jeff and his cabinet will never see eather side edg or bottom
 
well this is a nuff I pade Q.C.A. king thirtey dollars and you hav the note credited as soon as you can I must now close by saying I remane your loving Husban un till deth
