July the 24th 1863
 
My Dear Wife I a gane take my pen in hand to let you no that I recived a letter from you yestearday I was glad to hear from you glad to hear that you and the children was all well and doing as well as you was I am in tolerbel good helth at this time and I truley hope when those lins comes to hand tha will find you well and doing well the helth of our boys is good at this time well we still hav good news our men has got posession of Mores Iland near Charleston tha took poart wagoner and thirtey thousand stands of armes and no dout but what tha will take the place if we hant got it now tha will take the place if tha hav to starve them out Grant has goan to the petomac to take comand of our armey / Old lee will hav to get before long I think
 
the wether is pleasant and nice hear we had a nice rane in the fore noon to day and every thing looks fine the Cicesons bring in Cue Combers and beens potatoes for sale and milk and butter to sell you said you was a frade that we was a going South we are hear and all prosspects of us staying some time parte of our boys goan in the countery to cut timber for to bild a blockhouse hear and tha say we will be hear a good while be fore we leav this place we hav drew teams to hall the timber
 
You may look for me to come in a bout a week after norman king gets back to the regiment

well I dont hav mutch to rite at this time you never sayd whether you had got my clothing that I sent to you If you hav let me now /
 
            I rote what I sent to you and if tha get lost I want you to let me now all a bout it or if you get them let me now and if Robert bool has pade you that money that I sent to you by him if he dont I will be at home be fore long and then I will tend to him tho I think he will pay it soon if he hant all redey pad it I think he is a onest man tho I may be foold well a nuff on that
 
I rote you a letter while I was at Saint louis and put a hat band in the letter that I took oaff of a Copper heds hat that he wore for a boy and I want to no whether you got the letter or not you said you was at Lucey Anns bakers and hur babey was too months old and wade fore lbs tell hur that it is shurley the lest for hur and gorg is big a nuff to do better then that well I recon I will hav to close for this time /

tell the children that I send my lov to them and want to see you all and no tong cold tell how bad I want to see you and when you see me then you may now I am thare but dont be oneasey take good care of your self and I think after while we will live to gether at home with our dear children I must close for this time by asking yo to remember mee in your praiers so I remane your loving and devoted husbon
