Camp near Memphis

Dear Father
I suppose you have heard before this time that we were at this place preparitory to going to Vickburg Miss it is now supposed that we will start tomorrow morning for that place since we come to this place we have had quiet a hard / time we had no tents when we first came into this place but got some in a few days. I am unwell at present and have been for two or three days but hope that I will be all wright in a few days.
we have been paid since I wrote you last but I find that I will not have any money send home this time on account of having so many debts. we have also had our election since I wrote you last / the result of which was the election of myself to the Majorship of the Regiment over the Senior Captain of the Regiment
We held the Election yesterday evening their was twenty Officers present I received 18 votes Moodie White my 1st Lt and Adgt of the Regt received (1) vote Capt S B Yeoman who is the Senior Capt of the Regiment received (1) vote giving me a majority over all of 18 votes I shall not consider myself Major until I shall have received my commission /
