August the 4th A.D. 1864
Dear Sister I reseived your kind letter of July 13th it made the best time I ever got from the States it came in twenty days I was glad to here from you all at home an also the boys I reseived aletter from James dated June the 18th they was on there way to the front then he said they belonged to the 14th Army Corps I dont think it has been in any very desperate battels since they have joined it there was avery desprate battle on the 22d of July but I dont think they was in it altho the hole army has been fighting more or less all the time for two months
war has come back to me again if you call guerrillars war they are bad enough /
August 6th I neglected to finish my letter in time for the mail. I reseived aletter from Father and Nan, same time since that was the first line from Father since Mother died he did not write much he did not say aword about that other woman but I gess he has had troble enough with her without writing about her I heard from George and Julyann afew days ago they was well and still live in Sacramento I have not been over thare this summer yet but I am going soon in amonth or two about the time the State fair comes off it will be held at Sacramento. Ritty Ann you spoke about George not writing that is nothing for him when I go over to Sacramento I will get they minaturs and / send them to you if I dont come home and if I do I will bring them. I was very sorrow to here that the Chinee boy was going to prepare your crop you say times is very hard and prises high that is what I call good times if crops is good farmers will do well groseres is very high it true but give me the Country whare flour is worth fifty dollars per hundred lbs and evre thing in propotion and if the money is thare that soots me
the warren family I think they would make good lot of rebs especialy wess and Bill they had some of rail blood in them but they will find the South alittle hotter than usual if they go down thare now wess will have no one to bring him back this time

this great cusse has been sunk good good. Capt Semmes escaped that is bad So will he out gain I expect I wish the govrenment would demad demande him and hang him that would soot me
