Granville Moody White was born on August 24, 1835, in Columbus, Ohio, to Samuel White and Frances Clark. His father died around 1845. In 1850, the family was living in Franklin County, Ohio, and his older brothers Clark and Alex were working as farmers. White enlisted in the Union army on October 4, 1861, and mustered in as a 1st lieutenant in Company B of the 54th Ohio Infantry later that day. He earned a promotion to captain on November 1, 1862, and he resigned on July 13, 1863. He returned home to Columbus and worked as a teacher. He later enlisted as an assistant surgeon in the 144th Ohio Infantry (National Guard). After the war, he worked as a physician. He probably got married around 1870, and his daughter Fannie was born on October 7, 1871. He got divorced sometime before 1880 and married Sarah J. Jackson on October 20, 1881. He moved to Marshall County, Indiana, sometime after 1891, and he died there on October 17, 1903.
