Macon Cittey Mo Aug the 15th A.D. 1862
 
My Dear wife I one more time take my pen in hand to in forme you that I am well at this time and I truley hope when those fiew lins comes to hand tha will find you and the Children well and doing well Rittey Ann I recived a letter from you day before yesteardey which I was glad to read and hear that you and the Children was well and doing as well as comon and yesterdy I recived another that had went to St Louis and I recived one from Francis and he stated that peopel [paper fold] such an uproar that it is getting dangeros for them to travel and he thinks that tha will hav war thare in that State Rittey Ann you seeme to think strang of the way that I wrote to you con sernving of you staying at home I dont want you to think hard of me for I thought it was the for you to stay at home and take cear of the propertey the best you cold
 
Rittey Ann I think I will get to com home in eight or ten days I hav the promis of comeing and I think I will stay eight or ten days when i com I hav the money to bring me home and som left I hav lent som money to the boys un till the next pay day if I liv and all of our boys that ows me I will hav a bout fiftey five or sixty dollars then 
 
Rittey Ann I will com before long if I live but wee no that wee hav rebels in our Countery and tha may kill us but if tha kill our bodies tha cant hurt our sols and Rittey I want us all to liv so when wee com to die that wee can say com welcom dethe I will gladly go with you I may never see you and the sweete littel Children no more if I dont I want you to do the you can for you and them Children be good to your mother  and lern your books I hav one more littel book for you and i will bring it when I com home
 
I must close so no more at presant only remans yours truley
