Moffets School-house
March 20th 1862.
Respected Cousin;
I seat myself this morning to answer your kind and affectionate letter which I received the other day. I am teaching school this winter about seven miles from home and consequently did not receive your letter until I went home so that is the reason I have not written sooner. We are all well at present but have been a great deal sick this winter first in the faul Mother took a bad spell of something like Billious fever and she was poorly for about five weeks and about the time she got able to go about Caroline was taken bad with the Intermittent fever and was verry bad for some time and when she got to going around through the house Willie and Lizzie took the Measles and when they were getting better Caroline took them and is just getting well, so that there has been some of us sick all winter. (You will have to excuse this writing for the schollars are making such a noise and shaking me I will soon have to take up books) Caroline has received several letters from Crawford since he has gone to South Carolina She got one about two weeks ago he was well then and he sent a bunch of flowers in the letter We did not know that George was in the army until we received your letter. The rest of the friends are all well as far as I know As to going up to see you / I can not tell when as my school will not be done until about the first 20th of April Probably if nothing happens I might get up to see you about the first of May. As I have nothing more to write at present I will close remaining as ever your affectionate Cousin
Yours &c Lemuel H. Mattern
